Research the company
Just like in your interview, you need to arrive on your first day prepared; and that involves researching the company. As well as understanding the company culture and working out your job responsibilities, make sure you know about recent developments so you understand what is happening and can ask questions relating to this.
Also, check that you have all the necessary documents on the first day. Some companies may ask for you to bring in your ID or bank details if they haven’t already done so; so just call or email the Employer or Hiring Manager if you’re unsure.
Decide what to wear
Not sure about what to wear on your first day at work? Knowing how to dress appropriately is a key step to first-day success – as you want to give the best first impression!
Maybe you remember how people were dressed in your interview?
This could give you an insight into what is normally worn in the office. Alternatively, ask about the dress code when you receive the job offer.
Once you have spent a few days in the new job, you will be able to work out what sort of clothing is appropriate.
Of course, how you dress has nothing to do with how well you will do your job, but turning up to work in a vest and trainers may not be appropriate in a formal office. Equally, don’t turn up to a casual office wearing your finest suit!
Plan your commute
Timing your arrival is vital if you have been asked to come at a specific time on your first day.
Don’t be too early that the person greeting you is midway through doing something, but equally, be on time – arriving late gives the impression of poor time management. 5-10 minutes early is usually the best!
You need to factor delays into your commute. You do not want to find that you are caught in traffic or your train is delayed, and you are late on your first day.
This will give the employer a bad first impression, and cause you unnecessary stress.
One more top tip is to make sure you have eaten something. Sometimes nerves can make you not want to eat, but eating is better than having your stomach rumbling the whole day and wondering when you can go off for lunch.
Be sociable on your first day at work
Make an excellent first impression to your colleagues by being friendly, asking them their names and introducing yourself to each person you meet.
You need to be a master in small talk on your first day! It is okay to be nervous, but you will soon start to relax.
When you are greeted, start with a firm handshake and smile! Your body language tells a lot about your personality, and the first 60 seconds can make a significant impact on what others think of you.
Your mind can be a muddle when meeting so many new people, but try to listen when people are talking to you and remember their names!
Get ready to learn
Your first day may not be the most exciting start. A day of training manuals is never going to be your favourite thing. It is normal to feel overwhelmed, especially if this is your first graduate job.
Even if you previously had a similar role, you will still be learning new things. Be ready to ask questions and write things down, so you don’t forget.
This is especially important with things like passwords, so make sure to take a notepad and pen with you.
Know what NOT to say!
Know what not to talk about and do. Don’t start talking about your last job, that is like talking about your ex on your first date. That screams warning signs and red flags!
With all this being said, everyone around you has been in the same position as you, and they are bound to make you feel welcome. Following these top tips, you will make you shine on your first day. Good luck and enjoy!
